More Opportunities to Share Horses
The 4-H Horse Demo/Speech Contest

It is never too early to think about doing a presentation for the 4-H Horse Speech and Demonstration Contest that is held in conjunction with the State 4-H Horse Show in September. As you prepare for a presentation for a local 4-H project meeting or monthly club meeting, give some consideration to further developing your idea into a demonstration or project talk that you can give at the State Show. You are often asked to prepare a speech as part of a school project. Again, you could use this as an opportunity to talk to your fellow school friends about your interest in horses or the horse industry. With little additional work, you can share your knowledge and experience with a broader audience by choosing to participate in the State 4-H Contest.

General Event Guidelines

Remember a few things as you think about giving a speech or demo at the State Show. They include:

    • Demos can be individual or team (2 people) presentation.
    • Our demo area does not facilitate the use of live horses. Videos can be used.
    • It is preferred (but not required) that speeches be the presenter's original composition.
    • Completed 6th Grade but not passed their 19th birthday for year of competition.
    • Enrolled in 4-H in Minnesota but need not be a horse project participant.
    • Minnesota award representatives must meet National Contest guidelines.
    • Subject matter must pertain to the horse industry.
    • Length of presentation: Demo 10-15 minutes Speech 7-10 minutes.
    • Cite reference materials.
    • MOST Importantly -- HAVE FUN!

Evaluating Demonstrations and Speeches

A judge will evaluate demonstrations and speeches. After each presentation, the judge will take time to talk with each contestant. The following is a guideline used for evaluating the presentations and making awards:
